Joanne OBrien Tournament
2016 Tournament
The 15th Joanne OBrien tournament proved to be a very close and enjoyable occasion for players, coaches and spectators. On a glorious evening in Garryowen, 8 teams lined up to compete for the Joanne OBrien Trophy. This tournament is an U10 competition organised by Parkville FC and is by invitation only. The Tournament is usually hosted by the previous year’s winners, but with works being carried out in the Fairgreen, Geraldines FC stepped forward and made their grounds available for this year. With 83 players taking part in total, 2 of which were girls, who played for Janesboro FC.
In group One, Geraldines overcame Parkville 1,0 and Janesboro beat Caherconlish 1,0. This group proved to be very competitive. In the second round of games Geraldines and Janesboro drew, nil, all and Parkville and Caherconlish also ended on the same score line. Everything to play for in the final round of games. Janesboro took on Parkville while newcomers Caherconlish faced Geraldines. With both Geraldines and Janesboro level on points, both needed to win to advance and they needed to sore more than the other side or we were facing into a penalty shootout to decide who would advance. In both games we were down to just 2 minutes left to play when Geraldines scored. Boro were now in need of a goal, but Parkville looked like they might get it, but a free kick came back off the crossbar. The final whistles went just shortly after with Geraldines advancing on a 1,0 score while Boro had to settle for a draw with Parkville.
In group 2, many felt that this was a stronger group with possibly Granville or Shelbourne advancing. But the first round of games saw Mungret/Regional beat Fairview Rangers, 4,0. Granville beat Shelbourne FC 1,0. The second round of games saw Fairview Rangers beat Shelbourne 3,2 while Mungret/Regional beat Granville Rangers 3,0. Mungret/Regional went into the last game knowing a point would be enough to advance to the final, while Granville and Fairview Rangers knew they would have to win by a big score to advance if Mungret slipped up. Granville Rangers did their bit beating Fairview Rangers 4,0, but Mungret/Regional also won 4,0 against Shelbourne.
The final between Mungret/Regional and Geraldines FC, kept the large attendance entertained until referee Noel Dunphy blew for full time without a goal being scored. In the penalty shootout that followed, Mungret/Regional emerged victorious with a sudden death win.
To Ger Bond of Bonds Fishing Tackle Shop, a big word of thanks from Brian and Margaret for sponsoring this year’s medals. To Dermot Graham, the OBrien and Fitzgerald Families and their friends for sponsoring the goody bags for all those that played, we also thank them
Referees, Des Fitzgerald, Buster Hannon, Dean OBrien and returning after a 40 year spell of retirement, Noel Dunphy who refereed the final.
A special word of thanks to Geraldines FC Chairman Dave Connolly and his committee for making Garryowen available to us yet again, to Caroline and Bridie, who again prepared the refreshments, despite thinking they had a break this year.

2012 Tournament
Geraldines FC win 11th Joanne OBrien Tournament
Teams that took part in the 11th Joanne OBrien Tournament with Johnny Fitzgerald presenting the Trophy to Geraldines FC.
Final Caherdavin Celtic 2, Geraldines FC 3.
Another great day, despite the weather with Geraldines coming through to reclaim the Trophy. All those that took part should be congratulated for playing their part. Highlights on the day included a great goal from Jessica Coffey, who is the first girl to score in the 11 years of the Tournament. The Final was a ding dong affair with both sides leading at some stage in the final. Considering that Geraldines and Coonagh have hosted the Final on the last 10 occasions, there was a large part of the supporters watching the Final, cheering Caherdavin on, but Geraldines came out on top and both teams were warmly applauded for their efforts. With all roads leading to Garryowen for the 2013 Tournament, I take this opportunity to Thank the sponsors, especially Dermot Graham for supplying the Snack Bags for the Players, this seems to be more important than the medals. The OBrien and Fitzgerald Families, Billy Jones who travelled from Cork to present the medals and Joanne's Grandfather Johnny Fitzgerald who presented the Trophy to winning Geraldines team. Coonagh United again had the pitches in excellent condition and well laid out, the Ladies who helped with the preperations of refreshments finally and Seamus, Tony and Trevor. We again had to call on supporters to ref games and a special word of thanks to Jason OConnor, Noel Hannon and Ger OSullivan for covering the games. To all the Players and supporters thanks for making it a great day.
